The re-opening of the Forth and Clyde Canal
The celebrations were over the weekend of the 25-28 May 2001. These pictures were taken on Saturday 26th, where the main focus of activity was at the Union Inn, Lock 16.
The view west from Loch 16, with the Union Inn just behind the trees on the left. Hundreds of people are watching the first boats to travel from the Firth of Forth pause for the opening speeches outside the Inn.
The big fish at the Union Inn!
People busy the towpath further east in Falkirk.
The Millenium Link barge leaving Lock 18, as the flotilla of boats continue west. Overhead one of two helicopters buzz the boats. In places the towpath was crawling with well-wishers following the boats progress.
The Wee Spark follows the Millenium Link out of Lock 18.
The big fish leaving Lock 17, again to a huge crowd in the background. Notice the crane in the background, many locks had cranes in attendance, I can only assume they were for use in emergencies.
On our return cycle along the Canal willing helpers close the gates at Lock 18, boats were still passing through over 2 hours after we had passed here earlier in the day!
